You’ve probably heard laser hair removal described as permanent, life-changing, or even the best investment you’ll ever make. And all of that is true but if you’re dealing with hormone-related hair growth, the journey might look a little different.
At The Laser Club, with clinics in Manchester, Cheshire, Leeds, and Dublin, we treat thousands of clients with a wide range of skin tones, hair types, and crucially hormonal profiles. From PCOS to HRT to postpartum shifts, we understand that hair growth isn’t just about follicles it’s about hormones too. This is why we use the Primelase the world’s strongest medical-grade laser hair removal system, known for its ability to tackle even the most stubborn, hormonally influenced hair at all four of our clinics across the UK and Ireland.
Hormones are chemical messengers that affect everything from your mood to your metabolism and yes, your hair growth. The key hormones influencing body and facial hair include:
- Androgens – like testosterone and DHEA. These stimulate coarse dark hair growth.
- Estrogen – tends to reduce body hair by balancing out androgens.
- Progesterone – has a mixed effect depending on levels and context.
- Insulin – high levels which can often be due to insulin resistance, can trigger excess androgen production.
When your hormone levels are imbalanced whether that’s due to a medical condition, life stage, or medication you may experience increased or unusual hair growth. This is called hirsutism, and it can affect areas like the chin, chest, stomach, or thighs.
Laser hair removal still works but your treatment plan needs to adapt.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common hormonal conditions affecting women, and one of the most common reasons we see persistent hair growth in clients.
What you might notice with PCOS-related hair:
- Growth on the chin, jawline, neck, chest, stomach, or lower back
- Thick, dark hairs that feel coarse
- Faster regrowth even after shaving or waxing
The reality is PCOS doesn’t make laser hair removal ineffective, but it does mean your follicles are receiving a constant signal to regrow hair. As a result of this, you may need 10–12+ sessions instead of the usual 6–8, and you may need top up sessions every 3–6 months, consistency with sessions is crucial to weaken the hair over time. Our clients with PCOS see incredible and life changing results.

Using the Primelase, which offers ultra-high power and precision, we can more effectively disable the deeper, thicker follicles that are common in PCOS clients all while protecting the skin.
Another hormonal factor that can affect hair growth is hormonal contraceptives these can either improve or temporarily confuse your laser hair removal results.
- Combination pills often reduce androgens, which means less new hair growth and better laser results.
- Mini-pills or progestin-only methods can sometimes cause mild androgenic effects, slightly more hair growth.
- Starting, stopping, or switching birth control during treatment can trigger temporary regrowth.
If you’re undergoing laser treatments and thinking of changing your contraception, it’s a good idea to let your laser therapist know in advance, monitor for any new areas of growth and always stay on schedule with your treatments.
For transgender men and non-binary individuals undergoing testosterone therapy, increased body and facial hair is a common and expected effect. But it’s also an area where laser hair removal can be life-affirming.
Whether the goal is smoother skin pre-bottom or top surgery, feminizing the face and neck or managing dysphoria around hair pattern, laser hair removal can help with a specialized approach. At The Laser Club, we use Primelase to safely and effectively treat dense, coarse, testosterone-induced hair. Results are incredible but expect to need more sessions potentially 10–16 due to the strength of the follicles. We pride ourselves on providing a safe, respectful, and inclusive space for all clients, regardless of gender identity.

You don’t need to have PCOS or be on testosterone to have hormone-sensitive hair growth. Other common triggers include:
Pregnancy & Postpartum
- Most clinics, including ours, won’t treat during pregnancy
- After birth, hormonal shifts can cause regrowth or new hair patches
Menopause
- Lower estrogen levels can cause androgen dominance, leading to unexpected facial hair growth
- Laser can help manage these new patterns, especially on the chin or neck
Thyroid Disorders
- Both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can alter hair growth patterns
- Proper diagnosis and treatment can help stabilize results
At The Laser Club, we use the Primelase the world’s strongest medical-grade diode laser in the world to deliver fast, effective, and long-lasting results, even on coarse, hormonally-driven hair.
