Is it painful and is it safe?
Have you always fancied the idea of laser hair therapy but scared that it might hurt? Perhaps you’re on the fence about the results and how long they could last? Or maybe you just want to find out how it differs from IPL treatment? In this blog, we’ll answer these questions and help you make an informed decision about laser hair removal and whether it is the right choice for you.
What are the differences between IPL and laser hair removal?
For anyone that has done their research into long-lasting hair removal you’ve probably come across a couple of different options, namely IPL and laser hair removal. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) uses a broad-spectrum pulse of light to target melanin, and while it is great for treating sun damage, acne, and other skin conditions, it is not the best option for hair removal. IPL can’t distinguish between the melanin in skin pigmentation and that in hair pigmentation, making it unsuitable for a wide range of people.
Laser hair removal uses a much more precise pulse of light to specifically target the melanin found in hair. Not only is it more effective in removing hair compared to IPL, it is also much safer as it safe for all skin types and hair types. And, with real results after just two sessions, laser hair removal is an effective way to treat unwanted hair for women and men. Check out this article more advantages of laser hair removal vs IPL.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
For most people, laser hair removal is mostly pain free, especially when using state of the art machines such as the SMARTDiode with its ice-cool laser gun feature. However, if you have a relatively low pain threshold then you could experience some discomfort as the laser pulses heat the melanin in the hair follicles. Typically, very coarse, dark hairs will cause more discomfort compared to fairer, softer hairs as the coarse hairs will absorb more heat.
To help minimise discomfort you should always follow the advice of your consultant and make sure you carry out any pre-treatment preparation such as shaving the treatment area 24 hours before your appointment. You should also follow aftercare guidance to help reduce pain and any irritation.
How long does laser hair removal last?
This depends on the person in question, but most people experience a significant reduction in hair growth as well as a permanent removal of problem hair, especially coarser, darker hairs. At the Laser Club we use the latest technology and SMARTDiode laser machines which produce results that last up to two times longer than standard laser hair removal treatments.
To help keep the treated area free from hair we normally recommend a yearly top-up session, but a lot of clients will see a permanent change and reduction in hair following their initial course of 6 sessions. We normally see up to a 95% reduction in hair following a full course of treatment and between 40% and 70% reduction after just two sessions.
