Laser hair removal is one of the most popular methods for achieving long-term hair reduction. Yet, despite its growing popularity and effectiveness, misconceptions and concerns persist. Some of these concerns are based on outdated information, while others are simply myths, let’s take a deep dive and debunk some of these myths.
Myth: Laser Hair Removal Causes Cancer
Some people worry that the light and energy from laser devices can penetrate the skin deeply enough to cause cancer, especially skin cancer. Since lasers use light energy, there’s a common misconception that this may have a carcinogenic effect, like UV rays from the sun.
Truth: Laser hair removal does not use UV rays but rather uses specific wavelengths of light designed to target pigment in hair follicles. These light pulses only penetrate a few millimetres into the skin, reaching just the hair follicles and sparing the surrounding skin tissue. The American Cancer Society has found no evidence linking laser hair removal to cancer, and there’s no radiation exposure, making the procedure safe.
Myth: It Causes Infertility or Internal Organ Damage
Some fear that laser energy can penetrate deep enough to affect internal organs or even cause infertility when applied in areas like the bikini line.
Truth: The laser energy used in hair removal does not reach beyond the skin’s surface layer. It specifically targets the hair follicles just under the skin and does not go anywhere near the internal organs. For comparison, ultrasound and other imaging methods require a much more powerful energy to penetrate deeper into the body. Thus, when used correctly, laser hair removal is entirely safe for areas like the bikini line and poses no risk to fertility or organ health.
Myth: It Leads to Permanent Skin Damage
Laser hair removal involves heat, which has led some to fear that the treatment could cause burns, scars, or other types of permanent skin damage.
Truth: While it is true that improper use of lasers can result in skin burns or hyperpigmentation, these side effects are rare and almost always preventable. Laser therapists are trained to use the correct laser settings based on an individual’s skin type and hair colour, significantly reducing the risk of burns or discoloration. Modern laser devices also come with cooling systems that prevent the skin from overheating. Additionally, these effects are typically temporary, and permanent damage is exceedingly rare when performed by a trained professional.
Myth: It’s Ineffective and Will Cause More Hair to Grow Back
Some people worry that laser hair removal could stimulate more hair growth, potentially worsening their initial condition. This belief is particularly common in people with hormonal imbalances, like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which can cause excessive hair growth.
Truth: Laser hair removal, is effective for long-term hair reduction. In rare cases, especially among people with hormonal imbalances, a phenomenon called “paradoxical hypertrichosis” may occur, where new fine hairs appear in areas adjacent to the treated site. However, this is not the same as a “regrowth” of hair in the treated area, and it can be managed through further treatments. Most people see a significant and permanent reduction in hair after a series of treatments, with some needing only occasional maintenance treatments.
Myth: Laser Hair Removal Is Too Painful to Tolerate
People often assume that the treatment will be intensely painful because lasers involve heat, leading to a painful experience on the skin.
Truth: Laser hair removal can be slightly uncomfortable, but it’s often described as feeling like a rubber band snapping against the skin. At The Laser Club we use the Primelase machine, the world’s strongest laser hair removal machine which has an advanced laser system include cooling mechanisms that help minimize discomfort. Each pulse lasts only a fraction of a second, so any small discomfort is very brief. Most of our clients describe it as pain free.
Myth: It’s Not Safe for Darker Skin Tones
Early laser hair removal technologies were indeed less effective and riskier for people with darker skin tones, often resulting in burns or pigmentation changes.
Truth: At The Laser Club this is the furthest thing from the truth at all the Primelase treats all skin tones safely and effectively.
Myth: Laser Hair Removal Is Expensive and Not Worth the Investment
Because laser hair removal requires multiple sessions, some people believe the cost isn’t worth the outcome compared to temporary methods like shaving or waxing.
Truth: While laser hair removal can be more costly upfront, it is more cost-effective over time because it leads to a significant reduction in hair regrowth. By eliminating the need for razors, waxing sessions, and other hair removal products, you will save money in the long run. The convenience of longer-lasting results and minimal maintenance also makes it more than worthwhile.
